From 17th February to 19th February, 19015 the 4th Rifle Brigade of 80 Brigade, 27th Division, were in trenches at St Eloi, just to the south of Ypres before returning to billets in Dickebusch. William George died from wounds on 18th February but the battalion diary provides no information regarding casualties. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
